Requirements

  1. Identify the Cub Scout Six Essentials. Show what you do with each item.
  2. Learn about the Buddy System and how it works in the outdoors. Pick a buddy for your walk.
  3. Identify appropriate clothes and shoes for your walk outside. Do you best to wear them on your walk.
  4. Learn about the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace Principles for Kids.
  5. Take a walk outside for at least 30 minutes to explore nature in your surroundings. Describe four different animals, domestic or wild, that you could see on your walk.

Tips and Tricks

  • One of my co-den leaders has her Scouts bring the 6 Essentials to each meeting. I plan to do this in the next Scouting year.
  • If you budget permits, I recommend getting some reference cards from Leave No Trace.
  • Although a bit overkill for a short walk, it is probably a good idea to create a small checklist based upon weather, terrain, and environment. Have the parents let the Scouts follow the list as early prep for packing lists.

Special Needs Considerations

  • Reference the Den Leader Guide. However, the “Buddy System” may require some additional thought in some situations. Working closely with other Scouts and the responsible adults is essential.
  • Leave No Trace reference cards are a good tool for Scouts with some cognitive disabilities.
  • When planning for the walk/hike, double check the route/terrain for any issues Scouts may encounter.
