Requirements

  1. With an adult, build either a Pinewood Derby car or a Raingutter Regatta boat.
  2. Learn the rules of the race for the vehicle chosen in requirement 1.
  3. Identify how you could increase the speed of your chosen vehicle.
  4. Before the race, discuss with your den how you will demonstrate good sportsmanship during the race.
  5. Participate in a Pinewood Deby or a Raingutter Regatta.

Tips and Tricks

  • This is a good adventure for a Scout parent or guardian that is a civil engineer or some other type of engineer.
  • Pinewood Derby is absolutely my favorite activity in Cub Scouting. Yes. I’m one of “those” parents. In any case, do not underestimate your Scouts ability to plan, build, and execute a derby or boat.
  • I personally have my Scouts make a drawing that an adult helps digitize. Then come up with steps to complete their design. Have them complete any parts of the construction they are able to and an adult complete the rest. Have them test the car.
  • For those Scouts that may not be involved with competitive activities, this may be a good first/early exposure to good sportsmanship.

    Special Needs Considerations

    • Work to develop individual plans for how each Scout with special needs may complete this activity.
    • Consider acquiring special tools that may be used by Scout with special needs (e.g. large handle paint brushes).
