Requirements

  1. Create a secret code. Send a message to a member of your den or family. Have that person send a message back to you using the same secret code.
  2. Build and play a game that requires the use of codes or patterns.
  3. Select a single shape. Observe the environment around you. Write down where you see that shape and how it is being used.
  4. Using a package that contains a number of different colored items, discover the most common color.

Tips and Tricks

  • Creating a secret code is really fun activity. I would start with very basic codes “Letter/Number Substitution” and moving to a harder code. The handbook has good examples for each.
  • I know everyone hates to use technology but if you’re short on time, you can use the game “Wordle” from New York Times on the web. It’s the same game in the handbook but requires less time to complete.
  • The handbook recommends M&Ms for Requirement 4. I cannot emphasize the opposite. Counting treats is probably a form of torture. Using a bin of Legos is probably easier and you can use them to stack and count more easily.

Special Needs Considerations

  • This adventure may be particularly challenging for Scouts with various cognitive impairments. Try to keep the task at the appropriate pace for each Scout. Get parents involved to keep the Scouts on task.
  • It may be worth noting any Scouts with any visual impairments that might limit them from participating in some of the activities (i.e. color blindness).
